| | Cure For Crime | | | It reeks, man. Reeks like a double homicide on a sweaty day in late June. The kind of smell that just sticks to the inside of your nostrils like leeches, or something like that. It's a dirty world with dirty crooks. The antidote: a dirty cop.
That's when Vic Mackey comes in. He and his "Strike Team" take a bite outta crime in The Shield: Season Six. Yeah he breaks the rules, but you gotta play hardball with balls of steel. And he ain't alone. Cobra has a cure, Clint is swimming in The Dead Pool, while Leo has almost Departed to the dark side.
Suppose some of our finest do play by the book. Like the real bad boys-stopping Cops, Dragnet (Free), and a dick named Dick Tracy (Free). But they're such squares. At least goofball fuzz like Misfit Patrol, Reno 911! and poor Detective Elephant Man (Free) bring the funny.
But what about dames and games? Glad you asked. Take a ride with Joan As Police Woman or throw down with Police Tactical Training, SWAT 4: Gold Edition, and Piggy Police. We like our bacon extra crispy.
| | Check out The Shield: Season Six | | | | | The Undead Suck | | | | It bites being a vampire. Immortality is overrated, you can't just enjoy a doughnut and coffee anymore, and most vampires look like a piece of beef jerky. Sure there's the attractive ones like Catherine Deneuve and BloodRayne, but for every Angel, there's at least two Nosferatu. Check out Blacula for a blood soul brother, and Viva Voce are gallon donors on their album Get Yr Blood Sucked Out. | |
| | | Featured Publisher | | | mariposaHD is the world's first High Definition TV show distributed directly on the Internet. It is made by four ordinary guys, with consumer-grade equipment, in their living room. It's TV, 21st century-style. mariposaHD was created by Mike, Jeff, and Dominic who grew tired of their ordinary lives in the United States. They quit their jobs, sold their possessions, and moved to Argentina.
We spoke with Dominic about mariposaHD.
BitTorrent: When did you start doing mariposaHD? What was the inspiration? Dominic: The "mariposa project" (as it was then called) officially commenced on New Year's Day 2005 when the four of us went to a beach in Pinamar, Argentina, after meeting there for the first time almost exactly one year earlier. In the next six months, the original idea evolved from an online photo gallery, to a TV show, to an HDTV show, and finally to mariposaHD, "the world's first HDTV show for the Internet." After picking up our lives and moving to a new continent, the four of us were inspired to do something creative; something that had never been done before. Additionally, after our first few months of exploring South America we had this reoccurring saying that, "we should be filming this."
BitTorrent: What is the estimated total viewership of mariposaHD? Dominic: Since our online launch in December 2005, 160,498 episodes of mariposaHD have been downloaded from our bittorrent tracker, which we think is quite impressive since our HD videos average about 1-2 gigabytes each. Additionally, 65,130 of our iPod videos have been downloaded directly from Apple's iTunes store. So, 225,628 downloads in total from the two sources we can easily count. However, our videos are Creative Commons licensed (free to download and share) and available from many sources which are impossible to count, such as the eDonkey P2P network, USENET newsfeeds, and other bittorrent trackers (such as BitTorrent.com), so we think the real number of viewers may be significantly higher.
BitTorrent: What advantages do you find BitTorrent to have over other web distribution? Dominic: mariposaHD would have never come to be without the invention of BitTorrent! We wrote an email to Bram Cohen back in 2005 telling him exactly that. There would be no other way to economically share such large HD video files with viewers all over the world. Specifically, the things we like about BitTorrent versus other P2P networks are that it is open source, there is vibrant community of different clients and trackers, it is an established standard for video sharing, and as a publisher it gives us the ability to control our own tracker, and therefore count our viewers.
BitTorrent: In a very few words, where do you see TV, video, online entertainment going? Dominic: We think the future of TV over the next 10 years will be quite similar to what happened to music (MP3s, Napster, iTunes, etc.) over the previous 10 years. The music industry has gone from a situation where a small number of CD publishers essentially controlled all recorded music to today: compact discs are largely irrelevant, any musician in the world can publish an MP3 on the Internet, consumers can listen at any time of day to any song ever recorded, and I can hold a device with any song I have ever liked in the palm of my hand. Exactly the same thing will happen over the next 10 years with TV and movies, which is why today you see the leaders of those industries fighting so hard to stall this progress.
