He's The Marksman
Shooter Being perched up high in an abandoned building must account for the breeze. It's cold. Damn! Think the trigger's frozen in place. I can't miss. Missing is for bums. Only six people in the world can even make this shot...

This was our imagined internal monologue of a stressed sniper. Why go here? Shooter, it's in the house. So's the Wahlberg.

He's not the only sure shot around. Jude Law and Ed Harris are each other's Enemy At The Gates, a shooter's terrorizing Colin in a Phone Booth, and that squirt in Babel has crazy aim.

Be a sniper. They make such a diff'. Just take ABC News Presents: The Kennedy Assassination Beyond Conspiracy, The Parallax View, Frank Sinatra's Suddenly (Free), or even The Dead Zone.

And during those lonely hours while you await that dignitary your offing, why not stay frosty by playing Line Of Sight Vietnam, WarRock, or Hitman: Blood Money?

Or keep your aural senses atuned with They Shoot Horses Don't They (Free) or Dropkick Murphys - Guns Of Brixton (Free). Who says snipers don't like hardcore Boston Irish punk?

You Got Served... A Life Sentence
When the long arm of the law catches up to your deceit and misdeeds, it's time to pay the price with a stint in prison. A life in a cage is no way to live! Ask Paris Hilton and Two Gallants, and they'll tell you that Las Cruces Jail is probably no walk in the park. The prisoners below have a nightmarish life ahead. Plot your escape with Prison Break and Convict 13, or if you're Christina Ricci, then you might look to the Bikini Chain Gang for survival hints. If you think you belong on the other side of the cell, then try your hands as a Prison Tycoon. Remember to serve your time quietly, eat all your food, and never ever pick up the soap!

Good Bad Movies
The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies Like LOVE and HATE written on the knuckles, we're all made up of the good and bad (and in the case of Willem Dafoe, the ugly). Same goes for movies. A flick can be so wrong it's the bomb. That's right, we just wrote that.

Here's a double bill for those of you who dig the idiot savant offerings of cinema:

Back in '63, a guy named Ray Dennis Steckler and his ragtag team made The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies. Just watch it.

And of course there's the seminal Plan 9 From Outer Space by Ed Wood. Always a joy. Always a joy.

This B-movie schlock is the best. But don't bother trying to make sense of it all, for that'll only cause you to put a sensory deprivation tank in your garage. For us, that's the turning point. No going back after that.

Maybe you're just good-for-nuthin' white trash? In that case, embrace your inner hesher with NRA Varmint Hunter, Rebel Trucker: Cajun Blood Money, and Hunting Unlimited 4.

Is it possible for technology to go too far? With robotics getting better every day, it's likely that man's creations will turn on us and be the ironic end to humanity as we know it. Will Smith, The Space Rangers, the Governator and even Superman all think robots suck. Gay Robot would agree, but for entirely different reasons. On the other hand you've got Mega Man showing that robots can have hearts of gold. Check these metal men out and remember to treat your toaster with respect!

Cure For Crime
The Shield: Season SixIt reeks, man. Reeks like a double homicide on a sweaty day in late June. The kind of smell that just sticks to the inside of your nostrils like leeches, or something like that. It's a dirty world with dirty crooks. The antidote: a dirty cop.

That's when Vic Mackey comes in. He and his "Strike Team" take a bite outta crime in The Shield: Season Six. Yeah he breaks the rules, but you gotta play hardball with balls of steel. And he ain't alone. Cobra has a cure, Clint is swimming in The Dead Pool, while Leo has almost Departed to the dark side.

Suppose some of our finest do play by the book. Like the real bad boys-stopping Cops, Dragnet (Free), and a dick named Dick Tracy (Free). But they're such squares. At least goofball fuzz like Misfit Patrol, Reno 911! and poor Detective Elephant Man (Free) bring the funny.

But what about dames and games? Glad you asked. Take a ride with Joan As Police Woman or throw down with Police Tactical Training, SWAT 4: Gold Edition, and Piggy Police. We like our bacon extra crispy.

Featured Publisher
Featured PublishermariposaHD is the world's first High Definition TV show distributed directly on the Internet. It is made by four ordinary guys, with consumer-grade equipment, in their living room. It's TV, 21st century-style. mariposaHD was created by Mike, Jeff, and Dominic who grew tired of their ordinary lives in the United States. They quit their jobs, sold their possessions, and moved to Argentina.

We spoke with Dominic about mariposaHD.

BitTorrent: When did you start doing mariposaHD? What was the inspiration?
Dominic: The "mariposa project" (as it was then called) officially commenced on New Year's Day 2005 when the four of us went to a beach in Pinamar, Argentina, after meeting there for the first time almost exactly one year earlier. In the next six months, the original idea evolved from an online photo gallery, to a TV show, to an HDTV show, and finally to mariposaHD, "the world's first HDTV show for the Internet." After picking up our lives and moving to a new continent, the four of us were inspired to do something creative; something that had never been done before. Additionally, after our first few months of exploring South America we had this reoccurring saying that, "we should be filming this."

BitTorrent: What is the estimated total viewership of mariposaHD?
Dominic: Since our online launch in December 2005, 160,498 episodes of mariposaHD have been downloaded from our bittorrent tracker, which we think is quite impressive since our HD videos average about 1-2 gigabytes each. Additionally, 65,130 of our iPod videos have been downloaded directly from Apple's iTunes store. So, 225,628 downloads in total from the two sources we can easily count. However, our videos are Creative Commons licensed (free to download and share) and available from many sources which are impossible to count, such as the eDonkey P2P network, USENET newsfeeds, and other bittorrent trackers (such as BitTorrent.com), so we think the real number of viewers may be significantly higher.

BitTorrent: What advantages do you find BitTorrent to have over other web distribution?
Dominic: mariposaHD would have never come to be without the invention of BitTorrent! We wrote an email to Bram Cohen back in 2005 telling him exactly that. There would be no other way to economically share such large HD video files with viewers all over the world. Specifically, the things we like about BitTorrent versus other P2P networks are that it is open source, there is vibrant community of different clients and trackers, it is an established standard for video sharing, and as a publisher it gives us the ability to control our own tracker, and therefore count our viewers.

BitTorrent: In a very few words, where do you see TV, video, online entertainment going?
Dominic: We think the future of TV over the next 10 years will be quite similar to what happened to music (MP3s, Napster, iTunes, etc.) over the previous 10 years. The music industry has gone from a situation where a small number of CD publishers essentially controlled all recorded music to today: compact discs are largely irrelevant, any musician in the world can publish an MP3 on the Internet, consumers can listen at any time of day to any song ever recorded, and I can hold a device with any song I have ever liked in the palm of my hand. Exactly the same thing will happen over the next 10 years with TV and movies, which is why today you see the leaders of those industries fighting so hard to stall this progress.

Letters From Iwo JimaFlags Of Our Fathers America and Japan are like lodge brothers nowadays, but we once tangled big-time. In WWII, the battle over a certain isle was all the rage. Clint Eastwood shows both sides in his duo Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags Of Our Fathers. Hardcore stuff.

But we ask, what are these two countries up to now? We'll do some cherry picking here...

Japan still makes great Godzilla and Gamera movies, "inspired" by atomic bombings. They kick ass with the J-horror genre and they know cars: Tokyo Drift (Free), GT Channel.

Meanwhile, the U.S. loves war. Their WWII movies are often red: The Big Red One, Beach Red, The Thin Red Line. You can also take A Walk In The Sun (Free) or learn from vintage Private SNAFU training movies (Free).

Do the two countries share any passions? Indeed. The proof's in The Bad News Bears Go To Japan. So back off.

And you know, if war's true nastiness it too much, just get in denial and have fun with it. Why not play Battlestations: Midway, European Air War, or Combat Wings: Pacific Heroes?

Featured PublisherHow-To-Do Girls is one of the earliest and most successful series produced for online distribution. It's had millions of views and has even spun off a DVD series. We spoke with Mark Frazier, co-creator of How-To-Do Girls.

BitTorrent: What was the inspiration for How-To-Do Girls?
Mark Frazier: How-to-Do Girls was made to prove artists can get paid while fans share copies. In 1999, The Shadow (creator of BitTornado) and I came up with the idea for a funny, sexy, educational show that integrated advertising in the script so there are no commercial interruptions.

BT: Give us a quick history of How-To-Do Girls.
MF: Intro to Bikini Calculus was released July 31, 2004 on the original SupraNova.org and was downloaded 2,000 times the first day. Today it's been viewed millions of times and is one of the Top 100 Most Popular Viral Videos of All Time. Unfortunately How-To-Do Girls was about three years ahead of the advertising industry. It was one of the first eight video podcasts. Thankfully because of sharing new fans still download it every day and still buy DVD's of the complete Bikini Calculus Series. So people around the world are learning calculus and laughing while they do it.

BT: Why is How-To-Do Girls innovative?
MF: How-To-Do Girls did this without spending one cent on marketing. It was all through file-sharing. The fans made it happen. "Do it right, ask a Girl"™

BT: What are the advantages to BitTorrent over other web distribution?
MF: BitTorrent allows small publishers to affordably deliver their content to massive audiences. That totally levels the playing field with the TV networks putting fans in control of what is popular, not just what is forced on them.

Have Sympathy For These Devils
Infernal It's the last place any of us want to end up, but when it comes to entertainment it's infinitely cooler than puffy clouds and wuss angels. The heat below the feet is hard to beat. Hell can be a hoot... devils, too.

Just take the new game Infernal. It's hot. Or how 'bout Hellboy, with his hockey goalie glove hand that can unlock the pit of hell? Quite dope.

Sometimes Lucifer himself fakes us out by tweaking his name to Louis Cyphre (Angel Heart) while other times he wants to bone Sinatra's wife (Rosemary's Baby) or Saddam (South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut). Maybe he's a she? In that case, The Devil Wears Prada, but NEVER Chanel, silly mortal.

Indie rockers Viva Voce are singing the satanic verses, Depp just might open The Ninth Gate and those Satanic Yuppies are up to no good.

Want something really useful? Here's a tip: if you pass the dutchie to the big red guy, he'll surely Bogart that joint. Just ask Humphrey in Beat The Devil.

Featured PublisherTED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Their slogan is "Ideas Worth Spreading" and they've hosted hundreds of speakers ranging from Clinton and Gore to Bono and Peter Gabriel to Google's Brin and Page to rocketeer Burt Rutan and DNA discoverer James Watson. We spoke with June Cohen, director of TED Media.

BitTorrent: How did the concept for TEDTalks come about?
June Cohen: TEDTalks grew out of our efforts create a television series based on the presentations from TED. When TV partners balked at the content ("too intellectual"), I realized it was time to change strategies. The rise of online video had opened up an entirely new opportunity, even better suited to the content and audience. Last July, TED began releasing the talks via the Internet directly to curious people interested in great ideas and inspiration.

BT: What is the purpose of TEDTalks?
JC: Over the last year, we've reinvented TED from an exclusive annual conference in Monterey, CA to a year-round source of free knowledge and inspiration for the entire world. Our goal with TEDTalks is to bring the talks delivered at TED - powerful, 18-minute presentations from the world's most fascinating people - to the widest possible audience, upholding the highest possible production values (we film, edit and present at cinematic standards). These are ideas worth spreading!

BT: What's the approximate viewership for TEDTalks?
JC: More than five million people worldwide have viewed more than 10 million videos, and we keep setting new traffic records every day. More than half our audience comes from outside North America; not surprisingly, the international audience is more likely to download the talks than watch them online.

BT: What advantages does BitTorrent have over other forms of web distribution?
JC: What TED loves about BitTorrent is that it democratizes the costs of distributing the highest quality, highest resolution videos. This year we recorded our talks at 1080p/24 fps, which looks like cinema. As TED pushes into HD online distribution (we've already published several talks at 480p, and higher resolutions will follow eventually), BitTorrent makes it easy and affordable to distribute 720p and even up to 1080p quality.

BT: Are there plans to take TEDTalks beyond the web to other media?
JC: Yes, of course! TEDTalks have always been available on computers and iPods; this year we're working to bring the talks to DVD players, mobile phones and also flat screen televisions via devices like AppleTV and the Xbox 360. We're also investigating some other exciting options - Stay tuned.

Of Epic Proportions
Epic MovieWhat is epic? The Latin root "epi" means... Well, we don't know what it means offhand.

But what makes a movie epic? Maybe it's miles of poor extras getting mutilated like in Braveheart. Perhaps it's a mega-geek story arc like Star Trek or homemade mini-geek stuff like LEGO Animation. Some might reckon it's big Night At The Museum box office while others claim it's running time, in which case Barry Lyndon joins the pack.

So some cats figured this stuff was rife for satire. The result, Epic Movie, an all-out spoof of recent epics. Superman Returns, Nacho Libre, and Borat all get the treatment with help from Fred Willard, David Carradine, Crispin Glover, and Carmen Electra.

Remember, the epic is all around, and it embodies us in its giant grasp. Just listen to a Tenacious D concert or immerse yourself in such games as Civilization 4, Aveyond, Heroes Of Might And Magic II Gold, or Empire Earth II Platinum. Platinum, sounds so epic.

Featured PublisherSomething To Be Desired is an episodic web series about twenty-somethings that takes place in Pittsburgh, PA. It's funny, it's frank and it's frustrating -- which pretty much sums up life in your mid-twenties. Unlike most web series, STBD has a cast of 25 people.

BitTorrent: What inspired STBD?
Justin Kownacki: STBD grew out of an idea I'd had for a short film. I kept wondering what would happen to these characters beyond that self-imposed timeframe. By 2003, the broadband infrastructure was starting to take shape, and I realized an episodic series online could find an audience over time -- so we gave it a try.

BT: Was it always intended for the web?
JK: I'd always been interested in the concept of creating something episodic -- I grew up in a TV and comic book whirl -- so that idea has been in the back of my head for awhile.

BT: STBD is a fairly involved production. Is it expensive to produce? How do you finance it?
JK: It's financed entirely out of my pocket at the moment, plus the generous donations of our loyal fans and patrons. On average, if you add up server costs, tech support / design costs, DV tapes, travel, props, food, etc., it comes to about $200 a week. That's not counting the actual hours spent writing, acting, filming, editing, etc. -- the entire cast and crew (mostly me) does it as a labor of love at the moment.

BT: Are there plans to take STBD beyond the web to other media?
JK: We don't really see a big divider between the web and other media. Everyone's in the same medium, as far as I'm concerned. Whether you watch a show online, on TV, in a theater or on your phone, the basic storytelling mechanism is the same. (So, yes, if someone wants to put STBD into your living room or up in lights, we'll definitely talk.)

BT: What advantages does BitTorrent have over other distribution?
JK: BitTorrent connotes a sampler platter to me. Because you can download media across multiple user channels at high speed, the actual investment of time is different from the act of surfing websites and finding specific media you want to consume RIGHT NOW. You can backstock interesting things you find through BitTorrent and sample them later, which bodes well for the kind of media we produce -- episodic content that benefits from a little time to marinate in people's minds.

BT: Upcoming projects beyond STBD?
JK: We have additional series ideas we'd love to put in the water, as well as a few potential spinoffs from STBD. Our focus right now is on finding ways to open source the creative side of the show to a larger extent, where the audience can take a more active role in the creation of storylines and scenes, should that be something they're interested in. Beyond that, the show as-is takes up most of our waking hours, and even some of our dreams. After four years, we'd expect nothing less.

Babel On
BabelHeck yeah it's complicated. If it was easy, anybody could follow the plot. But who wants to be just anybody? You're a somebody.

And what are we babbling on about here?

Babel, of course; the final installment in Alejandro González Iñárritu's highly regarded "Death Trilogy." The first two in his series are 21 Grams and Amores Perros (that poodle vanishing into a hole in the floorboards is priceless). They're dense in the same way as Babel, with multiple storylines and emotional rollercoaster rides cutting each other off like Beemers in LA during rush hour.

But these movies work. And they've got star power. In Babel, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are more than ready for their close-ups while Gael Garcia Bernal and Rinko Kikuchi bring some international indie cred.

We understand if your brain must ejector seat from all of this. That's why we offer you the stunning word game, Babel Deluxe. Or why not take a journey aboard Babylon 5? Perhaps you require some B-movie trash like War Gods Of Babylon? It's good. There are babes in that one.

Featured PublisherdotBoom is a puppet show about web designers who hate themselves. The tagline for the series is "It's like a sitcom, but funny." dotBoom is a look at the web industry through the eyes of animate foam: "It's like the Muppets, but vulgar." dotBoom is created by Brian Hogg, who works in the web industry, "plundering friends and employers alike for the jokes he puts into the show."

BitTorrent: When did you start dotBoom? What was the inspiration? Was it always intended for the web?
Brian Hogg: I started production on dotBoom in early 2006, with the puppet and set construction. The first episode was released in August 2006. I had originally pitched a series of short videos to be included in an awards show I was working on, which didn't end up happening, but I liked the characters I'd used, and wanted to write more for them. Those short 20 second bits evolved into dotBoom. The web seemed the best place to put it, allowing me to circumvent the traditional television structures, tell exactly the kinds of stories I want and have complete creative control.

BT: You're in Canada. Do you see this as an advantage or disadvantage in regards to getting attention for dotBoom?
BH: In some ways it's a disadvantage, yes. The obvious one is that while the web is global, the creative people, and the people who talk about the creative people, tend to congregate in places like New York and California. So that's something to work against, absolutely. On the plus side, though, you can still strike up conversations with those people, no matter where they are, and if they like your stuff, they'll still talk about it.

BT: What advantages are there to BitTorrent compared to other distribution on the web?
BH: BitTorrent is a great way to send out large files. As well, the fact that, as the files get more popular, it makes it easier to get, rather than harder, is a tremendous plus.

BT: What are your future plans for dotBoom? Do you have any other series in the planning?
BH: I'm running the current season through until about episode 28, sometime in June. After that, I'm going to take some time off, before thinking about a season two. I'd really like to find a way to stage it with a larger budget, and have a more properly produced show that just happens to be presented online. I'm hoping to accomplish that through a mix of audience donations and product sales such as T-shirts, DVDs, and dotBoom-related books. As far as other series, I have a number of ideas, but dotBoom is taking up all of my attention right now.

BT: In a few words, where do you see TV, video, online entertainment going?
BH: It certainly seems like the content is being detached from the medium; Calling something a "television" show is becoming increasingly irrelevant, as it is shown not only on televisions, but online in a variety of forms, with consumers viewing it on a wide range of devices, in a whole slew of contexts. At the same time, online shows are, with things like Apple TV and the Xbox 360, being brought onto more traditional devices, blurring the lines almost completely. It seems a pretty good bet that eventually distinctions such as "television" and the like will be dropped almost completely, and what will matter most is the content itself, not the technology it should be viewed with.

The DepartedBased on these highly entertaining movies, one might reckon it's a swell idea to join The Mob (or Mafia or Cosa Nostra or whatever other name you wish to give) and that straight work is chump change. But that's hogwash.

Kids, do not join the racket.

Take The Departed. Everyone pretty much bites it. And sure, Al Capone has the life in The Untouchables (in which De Niro and De Palma make De Good movie), but he ultimately goes to the slammer for taxes.

Still not convinced? Then take a ride with the boys in Gang Bullets (Free) or see how tough a heist really is in Gangster Story (Free), Reservoir Dogs or The Friends Of Eddie Coyle.

Maybe you should just stick with playing mob games. Gangsters 2 is like The Sims for Scorsese fans and in Scarface: The World Is Yours, your little friend can say hello over and over. And if you like Mr. Pink, you can be him in the Reservoir Dogs game.

Be a virtual Buscemi and skip the real deal.

Featured PublisherGoodnight Burbank, a web-based news comedy series, has the near look and feel of primetime network TV, but presumably it's produced on a metaphorical shoestring. The series has won a Vloggie award (yes, they have those now) and it has gained a loyal and rapidly growing audience on BitTorrent.com. We spoke with Hayden Black, the creator, head-writer and producer of Goodnight Burbank, who is also a Manchester, UK transplant to Los Angeles.

BitTorrent: GNB -- how did it start? What was your inspiration?
Hayden Black: I saw my parents watching the news and was troubled with how seriously they took it. I thought the best way to burst that bubble was to present a newscast where we saw through the smoke and mirrors of a well-produced show and saw the warts-and-all process of how news is determined and then presented.

BT: Was it always intended for the web?
HB: No. It was originally an outline for a TV series. The web just got there first!

BT: GNB has generated a fair amount of press, what are highlights?
HB: The LA Times has called us "bracingly funny." TV Guide listed us as "Best of the Web." USA Today said we were "a lot better than 99% of the stuff on TV." We've also been featured by the BBC, Hollywood Reporter, and a brace of international magazines from Germany to the Netherlands. No clue what they said as I don't speak the languages and babel-fish doesn't so much translate as make things into short, surreal comedy monologues.

BT: What is the estimated total viewership of GNB?
HB: In the millions.

BT: Are there plans to take the series beyond the web to other media?
HB: We're talking to various studios but my ideal situation would see GNB living in a multi-platform world; a TV show complimented by original segments for both the internet and mobile phones.

BT: What advantages do you find BitTorrent to have over other web distribution?
HB: BitTorrent.com is the only place where you can see the uncompressed versions of the show, giving you a much better picture and sound quality. Go BitTorrent!

BT: In a very few words, where do you see TV, video, online entertainment going?
HB: I see the big playground that is entertainment getting bigger!

BT: Any words of advice or inspiration to folks looking to publish their creative works on the web?
HB: Be original. The world doesn't need more tired, re-hashed, cliche-ridden parodies.

BT: Upcoming projects beyond GNB?
HB: GNB now has a spin-off series entitled Goodnight Burbank: Breaking News that allows us to put up brand new content EVERY SINGLE WEEK. And I'm developing other comedies too, none of which I can talk about otherwise I could get shot. By myself.

Check out Goodnight Burbank

Diorama Drama
Main FeatureBen Stiller needs a J-O-B, so he gets a night guard gig at the Museum Of Natural History, because that's where this movie takes place. But this creepy joint houses an ancient Egyptian tablet that causes all of its exhibits to spring to life at night: T-Rex skeleton, taxidermied animals, a wax Robin Williams and a Lilliputian Owen Wilson figurine. Can Ben keep order in Night At The Museum and become a dude?

Yet more trouble lurks as the night guards of old (including living dinosaurs Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney) set out to steal the tablet that's like a fountain of youth. Kung Fu fights and madcap chases ensue. Should also be mentioned that Ricky Gervais adds his great comic awkwardness as a stuffy museum director.

So how does this flick rate with the rest of the museum-gone-wrong genre? Can only think of one other right now, The Relic, but that's really a monster movie with a hot scientist heroine. NATM is good viewing for its stacked cast, show-off CGI and history lessons.

Featured PublisherMatthew Manson is the creator and producer of Bikini News one of the most popular series of self-published downloads on BitTorrent.com.

BitTorrent: What was the inspiration for Bikini News?

Matthew Manson: Bikini News came from the idea that there are people out there who want to laugh, but might not just know it yet. So, they'll tune it to watch beautiful women in bikinis, but eventually stay for the comedy. Our viewership in the episodes where the girls wear clothes is just as much (if not more) then the bikini-clad episodes. That said, bikinis are nice way to hook people in...

BT: Where did you find Mary Clark and Jen Jackson, the anchors of Bikini News?

MM: I was very lucky to meet them around the same time as I conceived the show, and we all thought this would be the perfect venue for them to show off their comedy chops. I have literally auditioned 100 people for shoots when they've been unavailable, but no one could ever come close...

BT: What is the estimated total viewership of Bikini News?

MM: Since we've started Bikini News about seven months ago, I'd say we have about six million views across all the sites we're on. That's including the girls' personal video blogs.

BT: What advantages do you find BitTorrent to have over other web distribution?

MM: I love BitTorrent. I use it for almost all my downloads. I find that it has a huge advantage over the older client/server method, simply because you aren't tied to the available resources of one server. I love the fact that, at its core, the BitTorrent client REWARDS the seeders with faster download times. It really encourages people to share and keep sharing. It's a utopia!

BT: In a very few words, where do you see TV, video, online entertainment going?

MM: Very, very soon (if not already) TV, video, and online entertainment will converge into one. So you'll be downloading your favorite show or podcast on your TV and putting on your Blackberry to watch on while you're eating lunch. It's an exciting time because of the immediacy and availability of all video content.

A whole new world of file sharing

Great piece by Dawn Chmielewski in the San Jose Mercury News.. which was syndicated in newspapers and websites across the country..

Dawn writes, "any examination of BitTorrent's potential needs to start with an understanding of how it differs from other file-swapping technologies. BitTorrent breaks giant files into tiny bits and spreads the distribution load among dozens or hundreds of computer users. It's built on the notion of cooperative distribution -- to get pieces of the file you lack, you must offer up chunks in exchange."

I'll offer a little further detail on this point because we do hear quite a few misconceptions. BitTorrent is a server-to-client distribution technology, similar to the web (HTTP). It is *not* a P2P network which indexes people's hard drives and makes their files available. There is centralization in a BitTorrent deployment because the download originates from a website. The elegance is what takes place after you kick-off a download... which was what Dawn is referring to when she talks about breaking files up and spreading the hosting costs around to other downloaders. She also offers up a couple of good examples:

"BitTorrent dramatically improves the economics of the Internet as a broadcast medium. With distribution costs removed, budding filmmakers like Ben Buie of HighlyDef Productions in Altanta can suddenly afford to release ``On Our Way Up,'' a full-length docudrama, based on the lives of three brothers, shot in high-definition video."

Also this one:

"Linspire, a San Diego software developer, uses BitTorrent to distribute its Linux-based software, including its recently released Linspire Five-0 operating system. BitTorrent saves Linspire about $20,000 a month, a company spokeswoman said."
